Methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS) | Manta 931

Product Code: Manta 931

Chemical Name Methyltrimethoxysilane
CAS Number 1185-55-3
Molecular Formula C4H12O3Si

Product Description

Manta 931 is methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS, CAS 1185-55-3, ≥99% purity by GC, density 0.950 g/cm³) used as the primary crosslinker for neutral-cure RTV silicone sealants and as a hydrophobic surface modifier for fillers and masonry. It is comparable to Silquest A-1630, Dynasylan MTMS and KBM-13, with a ≥99.5% electronic grade available for electronics encapsulation.

Manta 931 is a fundamental alkyl-alkoxy organosilane. Featuring a non-polar methyl group and three highly reactive methoxy groups, it serves as the primary crosslinking agent for neutral-cure Room Temperature Vulcanizing (RTV) silicone sealants.

Beyond sealants, it is an essential monomeric building block for the synthesis of advanced silicone resins and acts as a highly effective hydrophobic (water-repellent) surface modifier for inorganic fillers and various substrates.

It is equivalent to industry benchmarks such as Momentive Silquest A-1630, Dow Z-6070, Evonik Dynasylan MTMS, WACKER M1-Trimethoxy, and Shin-Etsu KBM-13.

Features

  • Reliable Crosslinking: The three methoxy groups hydrolyze to form highly reactive silanols, driving the condensation-cure mechanism in silicone rubber and producing dense 3D siloxane networks.
  • High Hydrophobicity: The tightly bound methyl group imparts exceptional water-repellency to treated substrates and mineral fillers without altering their appearance.
  • High Purity (Electronic Grade): The ≥ 99.5% electronic-grade variant ensures ultra-low ionic impurities, making it ideal for the encapsulation and potting of sensitive electronic and photovoltaic components.
  • Solvent Miscibility: Highly miscible with standard organic solvents, including alcohols, aliphatic hydrocarbons, and ketones.

Applications

Manta 931 is an indispensable raw material utilized across mass-market and high-tech industries:

  1. RTV Silicone Sealants & Adhesives:

The most critical crosslinking agent for neutral-cure (alkoxy-type) room temperature vulcanizing silicone sealants, providing excellent shelf life and consistent curing profiles.

  1. Inorganic Filler & Pigment Modification:

Used extensively to surface-treat mineral fillers (e.g., silica, talc, mica, ATH) and pigments. It renders these powders highly hydrophobic, drastically improving their dispersion and compatibility within organic polymer matrices.

  1. Silicone Resin Synthesis:

Acts as a fundamental monomeric building block in the polymerization and manufacturing of advanced organic silicone resins.

  1. Water Repellents & Substrate Protection:

Applied directly or in solution to render porous materials—such as masonry, glass, and cardboard—highly water-repellent.

  1. Fiberglass & Composites:

Utilized as a sizing and binder additive for glass fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP) laminates, enhancing the interfacial bond between the glass fibers and the polymer matrix.

  1. Aerogel Synthesis: Serves as a fundamental core monomer in the sol-gel synthesis of highly hydrophobic silica aerogels, critical for manufacturing the world’s most advanced and lightweight thermal insulation materials.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Manta 931 hydrolyze on its own in water?

No. Manta 931 is practically insoluble in neutral water and reacts very slowly. Rapid hydrolysis to active silanols requires a hydrolytic catalyst such as inorganic or organic acids, ammonia, amines, or organotitanate/tin compounds.

What is the difference between standard and electronic grade Manta 931?

Standard grade is ≥99% purity by GC, while the electronic grade is ≥99.5% with ultra-low ionic impurities. The electronic grade is intended for encapsulation and potting of sensitive electronic and photovoltaic components.

Why is MTMS used as the crosslinker in neutral-cure RTV sealants?

Its three methoxy groups hydrolyze to reactive silanols that drive the condensation-cure mechanism, forming a dense 3D siloxane network. In alkoxy-type neutral-cure RTV sealants this gives good shelf life and consistent curing profiles.

Can Manta 931 hydrophobize mineral fillers, and is any pretreatment needed?

Yes. It surface-treats silica, talc, mica, ATH and pigments, rendering them hydrophobic without altering appearance and improving dispersion in polymer matrices. For optimal surface modification, pretreating the substrate with trace moisture plus a catalyst may be necessary.

How should Manta 931 be stored and what pack sizes are offered?

Stored at or below 25°C in original unopened containers, shelf life is 24 months from the production date. It is supplied in 20 kg pails, 180 kg drums and 900 kg IBCs.
